Consultations

Between January 2015 and May 2016 the MICIC Initiative led a broad and inclusive consultative process implicating States, international organizations, the private sector and civil society. The European Commission funded the convening of six regional MICIC Initiative consultations, preceded by regional civil society consultations organized by global and regional civil society networks. The governments of Australia and the United States funded consultations with international organizations, civil society and the private sector, and with members of the Intergovernmental Consultations on Migration, Asylum and Refugees, and other States.  

The consultations helped identify the roles and responsibilities of States (States of origin, transit, and host States) as well as between States and non-governmental actors (private sector employers and recruiters, international and non-governmental organizations, diasporas and migrants) in protecting and assisting migrants when armed conflict or a natural disaster strikes the country in which they are residing. The consultations considered different scenarios of migrants stranded in crises; migrant-specific vulnerabilities in crisis situations; responsibilities of home and host States and other actors; and areas of action for policy and international cooperation.
