Enhancing emergency preparedness in the context of climate-induced disasters in Rwanda
In Musanze District, Rwanda, the Department of Humanitarian Recovery and Response (DHRR) at IOM Headquarters, in collaboration with IOM Rwanda, recently conducted a three-day Migrants in Countries in Crisis (MICIC) training from 13 to 15 of August 2024. This training aimed to enhance emergency preparedness in the context of climate-induced disasters in Rwanda. The event brought together 24 participants, including 17 men and 7 women, from the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the Red Cross, the World Food Programme (WFP), and Plan International.
The training focused on building participants' capacity to effectively integrate migrants into emergency response plans, strengthening coordination mechanisms among key stakeholders, and improving communication strategies during crises. This initiative is part of MICIC's broader efforts, supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), to ensure that migrants are adequately protected and included in disaster preparedness and response efforts, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate-related challenges.
