Enhancing Migrant Inclusion in Emergency Preparedness through MICIC Training in Ankara, Türkiye
Ankara, 5 September 2024 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Türkiye, with the generous support of the U.S. Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), successfully conducted a three-day "Integrating Migrants in Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Recovery" training from 3-5 September in Ankara. The training, part of the Migrants in Countries in Crisis (MICIC) initiative, aimed to enhance the capacity of emergency response teams to address the specific needs of both local communities and migrant populations during crises.
Representatives from nine specialized institutions participated in the training, including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Turkish Red Crescent (TRC), Search and Rescue Association (AKUT), and several other humanitarian organizations. In total, 26 participants (15 women and 11 men) engaged in interactive sessions designed to increase their understanding of vulnerabilities in various emergencies, strengthen crisis management skills, and improve recovery efforts.
The training focused on practical tools for reducing vulnerabilities, incorporating feedback mechanisms, and sharing lessons learned to support the implementation of the MICIC Guidelines, which are designed to protect migrants in countries experiencing conflict or natural hazards.
A pre- and post-training evaluation demonstrated a significant increase in participants' knowledge. The average pre-test score of 71% rose to 84.4% in the post-test, reflecting a 19% overall knowledge gain. Notably, female participants improved their scores by 20%, while male participants saw a 17% increase. These results underscore the training's effectiveness in raising awareness and equipping participants with the skills to better respond to the needs of migrants in crisis situations.
The event was marked by active collaboration between participants, who shared their insights and experiences, further enriching the learning experience. Feedback from the satisfaction survey, completed by participants, indicated high levels of engagement and appreciation for the practical guidance provided.
