Libya’s Government Enhances Crisis Management and Migrant Protection with MICIC Training in Tunisia
Tunis, August 23, 2024 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Libya, with the support of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), successfully conducted a dynamic three-day training in Tunisia on the “Migrants in Countries in Crisis” (MICIC) Framework. From August 20 to 23, 2024, ten government officials from key Libyan ministries participated in the training, aimed at strengthening the country’s preparedness to protect migrants during crises and natural hazards.
Held in Tunis, the training engaged officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Solidarity Affairs, and the International Cooperation Office within the Prime Minister’s Cabinet. The 10 participants (6 males and 4 females) took part in practical exercises and exchanged best practices with a focus on improving inter-agency coordination and enhancing Libya’s ability to respond to complex crises affecting vulnerable populations.
This training plays a crucial role in enhancing Libya's capacity to effectively respond to crises and protect the most vulnerable, especially migrants," said a representative of the Libyan government. "Through improved coordination and crisis preparedness, we aim to ensure that no one is left behind during emergencies
The training benefited from the technical expertise of IOM’s Department of Humanitarian Response and Recovery, with a focus on building resilience and ensuring the safety of migrants during both man-made and natural hazards. Participants gained knowledge on crisis management techniques, humanitarian response strategies, and the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding human rights.
This essential training aligns with Libya’s ongoing efforts to address humanitarian challenges and ensure a robust and coordinated response to crises affecting migrants within its borders. IOM and PRM will continue to work closely with the Libyan government to strengthen institutional capacities and promote sustainable migration management policies.
