Senegal: Preparing for Assisting Migrants During Crises
IOM trained officials of Senegal’s Direction de la Protection Civile on key aspects of managing large population flows and assisting migrants in times of crisis.
Trainees also reached representatives of other governmental institutions, as well as civil society actors. Saly is one of West Africa’s top tourist centers and hosts large numbers of international migrants, including migrant workers, tourists and other visitors. It is also subject to coastal erosion and frequent flooding. Both factors make it a location in which it is important to develop emergency management efforts and actions that account for the presence of migrants, and their potential movement in crisis situations.
The activity, organised under the IOM-PRM Africa Regional Migration Program, was delivered in coordination with IOM’s Migrants in Countries in Crisis (MICIC) experts, and will be followed by a simulation exercise for officials.
